Tirta Gangga is a former royal palace that turned into a stunning open water garden sanctuary. The complex was built in 1946 by the royal Karangsem family, but was almost entirely destroyed by the eruption of the nearby Mount Agung in 1963. It was then re-built and restored to a beautiful complex as it is today. The name Tirta Gangga literally means “blessed water of the Ganges”, referring to the Hinduism’s holy river. The water of Tirta Gangga is considered as sacred and regularly used for religious temple ceremonies. This place is a maze of pools and fountains, surrounded by beautiful garden, stone carvings and statues. It is open daily from 8 am – 5 pm.
